    Hybrid Search: Effectively Combining Keywords and Semantic Searches

    This paper describes hybrid search, a search method supporting both document and knowledge retrieval via the flexible combination of ontologybased search and keyword-based matching. Hybrid search smoothly copes with lack of semantic coverage of document content, which is one of the main limitations of current semantic search methods. In this paper we define hybrid search formally, discuss its compatibility with the current semantic trends and present a reference implementation: K-Search. We then show how the method outperforms both keyword-based search and pure semantic search in terms of precision and recall in a set of experiments performed on a collection of about 18.000 technical documents. Experiments carried out with professional users show that users understand the paradigm and consider it very powerful and reliable. K-Search has been ported to two applications released at Rolls-Royce plc for searching technical documentation about jet engines

    Multi Visualization and Dynamic Query for Effective Exploration of Semantic Data

    Semantic formalisms represent content in a uniform way according to ontologies. This enables manipulation and reasoning via automated means (e.g. Semantic Web services), but limits the user’s ability to explore the semantic data from a point of view that originates from knowledge representation motivations. We show how, for user consumption, a visualization of semantic data according to some easily graspable dimensions (e.g. space and time) provides effective sense-making of data. In this paper, we look holistically at the interaction between users and semantic data, and propose multiple visualization strategies and dynamic filters to support the exploration of semantic-rich data. We discuss a user evaluation and how interaction challenges could be overcome to create an effective user-centred framework for the visualization and manipulation of semantic data. The approach has been implemented and evaluated on a real company archive

    NL-Graphs: A hybrid approach toward interactively querying semantic data

    A variety of query approaches have been proposed by the semantic web community to explore and query semantic data. Each was developed for a specific task and employed its own interaction mechanism; each query mechanism has its own set of advantages and drawbacks. Most semantic web search systems employ only one approach, thus being unable to exploit the benefits of alternative approaches. Motivated by a usability and interactivity perspective, we propose to combine two query approaches (graph-based and natural language) as a hybrid query approach. In this paper, we present NL-Graphs which aims to exploit the strengths of both approaches, while ameliorating their weaknesses. NL-Graphs was conceptualised and developed from observations, and lessons learned, in several evaluations with expert and casual users. The results of evaluating our approach with expert and casual users on a large semantic dataset are very encouraging; both types of users were highly satisfied and could effortlessly use the hybrid approach to formulate and answer queries. Indeed, success rates showed they were able to successfully answer all the evaluation questions

    Applying semantic web technologies to knowledge sharing in aerospace engineering

    This paper details an integrated methodology to optimise Knowledge reuse and sharing, illustrated with a use case in the aeronautics domain. It uses Ontologies as a central modelling strategy for the Capture of Knowledge from legacy docu-ments via automated means, or directly in systems interfacing with Knowledge workers, via user-defined, web-based forms. The domain ontologies used for Knowledge Capture also guide the retrieval of the Knowledge extracted from the data using a Semantic Search System that provides support for multiple modalities during search. This approach has been applied and evaluated successfully within the aerospace domain, and is currently being extended for use in other domains on an increasingly large scale

    Creating and Using Organisational Semantic Webs in Large Networked Organisations

    Abstract. Modern knowledge management is based on the orchestration of dynamic communities that acquire and share knowledge according to customized schemas. However, while independence of ontological views is favoured, these communities must also be able to share their knowledge with the rest of the organization. In this paper we introduce K-Forms and K-Search, a suite of Semantic Web tools for supporting distributed and networked knowledge acquisition, capturing, retrieval and sharing. They enable communities of users to define their own domain views in an intuitive way (automatically translated into formal ontologies) and capture and share knowledge according to them. The tools favour reuse of existing ontologies; reuse creates as side effect a network of (partially) interconnected ontologies that form the basis for knowledge exchange among communities. The suite is under release to support knowledge capture, retrieval and sharing in a large jet engine company

We propose a solution to tackle incompleteness and imprecision of annotations at querying time. This solution relies on two elementary reformulation types that use the notion of aggregation and the documents structure. We present the dynamic algorithm (DREQ) which combines these elementary transformations to construct ordered reformulations of user queries. Experimentations on two real datasets show that reformulations increase greatly the recall and that the precision is better for the first returned answers

    Desde o lançamento de Hegemony and socialist strategy, em 1985, a noção de antagonismo ocupa um lugar privilegiado no âmbito da teoria do discurso de Ernesto Laclau e Chantal Mouffe. Mesmo com o advento da categoria deslocamento, introduzida por Laclau em New reflections on the revolution of our time (1990) – a qual, como será aqui mostrada, assume papel central no empreendimento teórico como um todo –,o antagonismo mantém importância fundamental para a construção de lógicas, identidades e fronteiras políticas. .Neste trabalho, essa centralidade será contestada. Para isso, inicialmente, pretendemos, a partir de um percurso pelas principais obras de Laclau, identificar os elementos constituidores do antagonismo e confrontá-los com a leitura de seus críticos
